Rosalind considered the question with the seriousness it seemed to require.

“Would you like me to be?”

For the first time that evening, the most feared man in the county had no immediate answer. He repeated it, slowly, as though testing the shape of it in his mouth. “Would you like me to be.”

She set her cup down. “It would explain why everyone keeps abandoning perfectly comfortable furniture.”

His eyes moved, briefly, toward the women gathered across the room. Two of them looked elsewhere at once. “You noticed.”
